Dangers of Hot Weather Heat can kill. In Europe in 2003 over 35,000 people died in a heat wave. In France the temperature went at 104 Fahrenheit and stayed high for two weeks. Almost 15,000 died in France. Some 7,000 died in Germany, over 4,000 in Italy and Spain and 1,400 in the Netherlands. The World Meteorological Organization has said that heat related deaths may double in the next 20 years. Heat is deadliest to the old and to those in poor health and it is deadlier in the cities than in the country. It can also be deadly to the young who don't understand the danger of exercising in hot humid weather which causes sweat to evaporate less rapidly. Unrelenting heat is the most deadly because it causes people to be unable to rest and recharge at night. The duration of the heat is also a major factor. Dangers Heat Cramps occur when a brief imbalance of body salts is brought on by the heat. They usually occur in the legs. Fainting can occur when someone exercising experiences a sudden drop in blood pressure due to the heat. Heat Exhaustion is brought on by fluid and salt loss due to perspiration and by replacing them in an unbalanced way. Body temperature can rise to 102. It usually occurs more frequently after a few days of a heat wave. It's signs are dizziness and weakness. It can be dangerous to the elderly and sick. Heat Stroke symptoms are lethargy, confusion and ultimately unconsciousness. Body temperature may rise to 105 degrees. Heat Stroke requires immediate medical attention. Rules for coping with heat
Drink plenty of water. This is the fluid you body travels in. Slow down the pace of exercise Don't push yourself in hot weather particularly in a heat wave. Rest often and replenish fluids. Stop exercising if you feel fatigued, begin to breathe shallowly, develop a high pulse rate or headache. Stay in the Shade. If you have a distance to travel on foot plan your route for the most shade.
